Research accumulates from trade in your cities — light bulbs in the city view — and each completed advance unlocks units, buildings, governments or wonders while opening the path to further advances. The order you research in is the single biggest strategic decision of the early game.

Strategy — Beeline matters more than breadth: decide early whether you're rushing Monarchy for growth, Literacy for the Great Library, or military techs for an early war.
